House and surroundings
Quinta dos Carqueijais is situated on a south facing slope, directly adjacent to the large Caniçada reservoir. The house is recently built, using traditional materials – wood, granite, terracotta floor tiles –, which make it blend in perfectly with its surroundings.
The house is complete and comfortably furnished, giving ample space for 6 people. However everything is also aimed at enjoying the outdoors as much as possible. In front of the house is a spacious, partly covered patio with a dining area and sitting area. From here you also have a good view on the pool area, which is one level below.
The property’s grounds slope down in terraces to the lake. The largest part (well over 2 acres) consists of a lovely, well-kept garden, with tall trees and wide lawns alternating. The lowest area is woodland. The whole offers privacy and magnificent views over the lake and the hills at the other side.
At the reservoir (about 700 hectares) are ample opportunities for water sports. You can hire canoes, jet ski’s, pedaloes or learn how to water ski.
The lake is also the southern border of the national park Peneda-Gerês. In the spa village of Caldas do Gerês is an information centre. They provide information on the flora and fauna of the park, archeological finds (among which the Roman road that once lead from the city of Braga to Rome), walking routes, etc.
The water quality of the lake is frequently monitored by the authorities, and classified “excellent for swimming” (source: http://snirh.pt/).
In Rio Caldo, at the “centre” of the lake (5 km), you will find the marina, boat rental and several restaurants. In Sta. Maria do Bouro (7.5 km) there are some shops, a weekly market, and an excellent restaurant in the historic pousada. More shops, supermarkts, banks, post office etc. are in Amares and Vieira do Minho (± 15 km). The baker stops by the property every morning.
The distance to the centre of Braga is about 30 km, and to Guimarães (Capital of Culture 2012) 40 km. |
