House and surroundings
The owners of Casa do Cazal offer you true bed & breakfast accommodation in an atmosphere of warm but unobtrusive hospitality. In a guest wing on the ground floor of the beautifully decorated house are two bedrooms, a children's room and a lounge. You are welcome to use the living room upstairs, and of course there is full access to the gardens and the swimming pool. Your hostess serves a delicious breakfast on the veranda or, on chilly mornings, in the dining room. She will also gladly supply plates if you want to make sandwiches for lunch.
Casa do Cazal is situated in São João de Rei, an ancient village with a history that dates from before the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal in the XII century. Cobblestone streets, partly overgrown with vines, wind uphill to a small church, where you have superb views over the valley of the Cávado river. At walking distance is a small supermarket and the renowned restaurant Victor, that produces good, local food. The restaurant also houses a wine shop, a paradise for those wanting to sample the best Portugal has to offer.
The nearest town is Póvoa de Lanhoso (8 kms, all facilities), with a lively centre and a large weekly market. Worth visiting are the 12th century castle, and a restored castro (prehistoric settlement). On the road to Amares (also 8 kms) is the Ponte do Porto, a medieval bridge over the Cávado river.
The villa is not far from the city of Braga (17 kms) and the Portuguese National Park Peneda-Gerês (approx. 25 kms).
