House and surroundings

Casa da Eira Longa originates from the reconstruction of a large village farm. On the outside the complex of the house, stables, granery and threshing floor remained intact, but on the inside most rooms got a new destination.

In the former living quarters are two suites and three rooms, accessible through a partly covered inner yard. Breakfast is served in the partially modernised kitchen. A barn is transformed into the adega (bar). The owner has made another barn into a small museum, with antique furniture, old utensils and farming equipment.

Immediately visible is the spacious lawn, with the swimming pool on the one side and on the other the tennis court and children's playgrond.

Casa da Eira Longa is situated on the outskirts of the village of Vilar, in the middle of the Serra do Barroso. Together with the Serra da Cabreira the Barroso forms the area that links the Minho to Trás-os-Montes. A fascinating region with rough mountains, green valleys, cristal clear streams, old villages and everywhere traces of the Roman era and even older Celtic habitation. Not far from Vilar, near the village of Carvahelhos, is a well preserved castro, a walled settlement more than 3000 years old.
Carvalhelhos is also famous for its medicinal springs. In the village is a spa (open July - September) where you can find relieve from all sorts of ailments under supervision of a doctor.
The whole region is well-known for its fumeiros and enchidos (smoked and cured saucages and meats). The annual country-fairs in Montalegre and Boticas draw thousands of visitors.
A speciality of Boticas is the vinho dos mortos. This wine was buried after bottling, a relic from the French invasion in the early 19th century.

In village of Vilar is a café and a small shop with groceries. The nearest town is Boticas (8km, all facilities). Halfway on the road to Boticas are a few restaurants, a bakery, a butcher and a small supermarket.
The distance to the city of Braga is 95 km, and to Chaves 28 km.
The 18 hole golf course at Vidago (about 25km) is scheduled to be re-opened in June 2010.
