Village cottage with nice, terraced garden

Casa das Minas gets its name from two minas ("water mines") in the adjoining large vegetable garden. In a soft layer in the rock a horizontal shaft is being dug until enough water seeps in. Through a pipe the water is being collected in a tank, and usually the entrance to the mine closed. From way back this is how fields are irrigated and even whole villages got their water supply. The house, that used to be a second home for a Lisbon family, is converted into a lovely holiday cottage for 6 people. It has a nice classical atmosphere. Through the kitchen you enter the partly covered patio and the sheltered and sunny garden, with a granite built cistern where children can splash around on a warm summer day. Next there is the former vegetable garden, with all kinds of fruit trees and high climbing vines. Casa das Minas stands in Travassos, a traditional gold filigree workshop-village. Here you will find a few cafés, grocery shops and the Museu do Ouro (goldsmith museum). The nearest place to swim is a praia fluvial, an enclosed part of a river with picnic facilities at 4 kms. The nearest town is Póvoa de Lanhoso (9 kms, all facilities), with a lively centre and a large weekly market. Worth visiting are the 12th century castle, and a recently restored castro (prehistoric settlement). The city of Braga is 25 kms away. |
