House and surroundings
Quinta dos Moinhos – “estate with mills” – is situated in the green valley of the river Tâmega, just outside the village of Vila Nune. In the past the quinta grew grapes and produced wine, distilled aguardente, pressed olive oil, ground corn, and bred trouts in the clear stream that runs alongside.
The old farmhouse and outbuildings are recently restored with care and taste. The property now consists of the main house where the Dutch owners live, and the four holiday cottages Casa do Azeite, Casa do Vinho, Casa da Cebola and Casa da Laranja.
On the grounds – almost 4 hectares of meadows, orange and olive trees and vines – is also a mini-campsite with 6 places. The former wine cellar under the main house is transformed into a nice bar. There you can enjoy a glass of sparkling vinho verde or a meal cooked by your hostess.
Casa do Azeite is named after the olive oil that used to be pressed there. During the restauration the owners have preserved the original layout. In the living room the impressive oak levers are still in place, and also the stove for heating water needed for the second pressing. You share the very spacious bathroom with the stone tank where on water power the olives were being crushed before pressing. These robust elements and the thick stone walls are in surprising contrast with the tasteful furnishings - light, colourful and comfortable.
The name Casa do Vinho refers to the former winery in the cellar of the house. The ground floor used to be a drying shed, and is transformed into a comfortable and beautifully furbished holiday house for 4 people. The nicest place to enjoy the splendid view over the valley is the roof terrace next to one of the bedrooms. In the cellar are the showers and lavatories of the mini-campsite.
Casa da Cebola was an outbuilding and storage room for onions, potatoes and corn, and is now a pleasant and comfortable holiday house, also for 4 people. From the living room and the veranda there are magnificent views over the valley and the Senhora da Graça, an important local landmark.
Casa da Laranja is a new house, located in the orange grove.
The quinta is almost on the southern border of the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto. In the centre (± 10 kms) are shops, restaurants, banks, a post office and a weekly market. In the nearby village of Arco de Baúlhe are also several shops.
A 5 minute walk brings you to the Rio Tâmega, where you can fish, canoe or just enjoy the quiet.
Near the charming town of Amarante (about 40 kms to the South) is one of the finest golf courses of northern Portugal: Quinta da Devesa with 18 holes.
