House and surroundings
Casa do Monte is situated in a rural area near the village of Cabanelas, in the broad valley of the Rio Cávado. This is the heart of the Minho, the province that is also known as the garden of Portugal.
The house is classic and tastefully furnished, and offers everything that is needed for a pleasant stay. In every season the spacious sunroom is a wonderful place to be.
Around the house is a beautiful, large landscaped garden of about 2.5 acres. There’s plenty of space for children to play, sunny lawns and borders, attractive spots in the shade, an aviary, and because of the fence – part wall, part hedge – it is practically impossible for passers-by to look into it. Around the swimming pool and the pool house you have total privacy.
Less than 2 km from Casa do Monte is a river beach at the Cávado with a wide sunbathing field and a café. On the way there you pass the Quinta do Salgueirô, one of the producers of good vinho verde with vineyards along the fertile banks of the river.
In the village are a few small shops, cafés and a simple restaurant. The baker passes by the villa each morning.
More choice is to be found in Vila de Prado (5 km): all kinds of shops, a supermarket, banks, post office, restaurants and of course pastelarias. Its most important landmark is the medieval bridge over the Cávado.
Due to its central position Cabanelas is an excellent starting point for discovering the Minho. The distance to the centre of Braga is 12 km, to Guimarães (Capital of Culture 2012) 40 km, to the picturesque town of Ponte de Lima with its Roman bridge 30 km, to the authentic graineries of Soajo in the Peneda-Gerês national park 55 km, to Barcelos with its famous weekly market 14 km, and to the beach and the golf courses at Esposende about 40 km. |
