House and surroundings
Quinta da Fonte, set in the foothills of the Serra da Cabreira, is a former estate farm, its history dating back as far as the 13th century. Grouped around the inner yard were the granite built living quarters, stables, chapel, storages rooms, kitchen, winery and so on.
The quinta has been carefully restored and most rooms were given a new destination. Only the chapel has been restored to its former glory. The owners created this way a magnificent combination of ancient and modern.
The inner yard gives access to the guest quarters, which include 6 spacious and comfortable rooms and 2 even more ample suites. Each room and suite is named after a traditional farming tool used in the region, and looks out on the surrounding woods and fields.
The common rooms are also situated around the inner yard – the nice café-bar, the dining room, and the sitting room. At the back is a large patio on the old threshing floor. Next to it are the garden, the swimming pool and a small playground.
The harvest from the vegetable garden and the orchard, along with other local produce, finds its way through the kitchen to your plate in the dining room, where meals are served on request. These are supplemented with a choice of fine portugese wines, including of course the regional vinho verde.
The nearest small town is Vieira do Minho (3 km); there are all kinds of shops, 2 supermarkets, banks, the post office, restaurants, a health care centre, pastelarias, and a large weekly market.
At the nearby Ermal reservoir there are canoes and pedaloes for hire, there are nice places to swim, and also a facility for cable-waterskiing called Tele-Ski.
More possibilities for watersports are to be found at the large reservoir of Caniçada (15 km), at the foot of the impressive national park Peneda-Gerês. There are canoes, jet-skis, pedal boats and motor boats for rent and you can also learn to waterski.
The distance to the city of Braga is about 35 km, and to Guimarães (Unesco World Heritage) 40 km.
