House and surroundings
The hamlet of Mós is a member of a select group of villages in Northern Portugal called Aldeias de Portugal. Over the years these villages have maintained their original, almost medieval appearance, and aim to keep it that way.
Casa do Ribeiro is the last house of the village. It stands somewhat apart from the rest – almost secluded but not remote! A little further on the paved road ends with the start of the fields and hills.
While restoring the property the owners have kept a nice balance between old and modern: The bedrooms have airco, and the water of the swimming pool is cleaned by uv-light (no salt, no chlorine). On the other hand, in the living room you still can see part of the rock the house was built on, and the curtains are made of traditional handwoven linen.
From the garden and by the swimming pool there are wide, phenomenal views over the valley of the Rio Ave and the Serra da Cabreira, and on a clear day even the Serra do Gerês.
The vicinity offers plenty opportunity for walking. There are several marked trails in the area, one of them passes through the village. At the reservoir of Ermal (9 km to the North) is a facility for cable water-skiing, and there are nice beaches to swim.
In the nearby village of Rossas (3 km) are a baker, a butcher, a mini mercado (a small grocery shop), a pharmacy and a couple of cafés. The nearest restaurant is 5 km away.
More choice is to be found in the town of Fafe (18 km); there are several supermarkets, banks, the post office, restaurants, pastelarias, a health care centre, and a large weekly market.
The distance to Guimarães (Unesco World Heritage) is about 30 km, and to the impressive Peneda-Gerês national park 25 km.
